Shoshana Walfish was born in Hamilton, Ontario. She received her BFA from Concordia University in 2011 and is currently living and working in Montreal. The exhibition features work created in 2011.
Artist’s statement :
Behaviour, animal instinct, and the crucial moment of freezing an emotion are what fuel this body of work. The imagery stems from obsessions, fascinations and preoccupations, including human behaviour, social and societal norms, the human/animal connection, and the tangible correlation between skin and feeling.
This body of work is heavily inspired by theatre, the medium through which normal reactions are intensified into a state of drama that is impossible to misunderstand. The theatre is a place where feelings are exhibited, rather than diluted and disregarded, as they are in common interaction. The surface of the face is dissected to extract raw emotions, seen infrequently in the daily indifference of existence: fear, horror, fascination.
